Balloon Flying

Like the kites I flew, I had a similar fascination with balloons. I would get balloons from my mother now and then, and I loved staring at them as they flew in the sky. I would tie a kite string to my balloons and let them go, letting them rise as far as the string would allow. I would stare at the balloons up in the sky for hours. I wondered what it would be like to be up that high, and I what it would be like to look down at myself. This solitary experience held my fascination for many years, and still fuels my strong interest for balloons.

In this performance/experience that I wanted to create, I allowed my classmates to each obtain a balloon and a kite string. As a result of the wind and weather conditions we had, it was difficult to obtain the height and distancing that I desired. Regardless, it did produce a similar effect that the kite flying did. The enthusiasm of the balloons seemed to extend the experience of the viewers, and in the end produced an interesting collaboration by tying all the balloons together and letting them all go on one string. I am interested in trying this experience out again for my viewers, allowing them to experience it in a way similar to mine from childhood.
