Collaboration with Mom
My mother's role has always been enormously at play in the background and creation of my artwork. With this performance, I wanted to explore her perspective as the shaper of my history, of my childhood, and my present day. This mixed-media performance involved three videos that played in the back part of the room, which displayed videos of my mother and I interacting with my childhood cat and her two new dogs. The front of the room had a small room for my mother, in which the audience was also able to participate. She was storytelling, from her perspective, about different childhood memories that I had, while outside the wall I slept with my partner, exposed in our underwear for everyone to gaze upon. This piece spoke about issues of history, the unawareness of separation, and a longing to connect to memories forgotten.
